An unidentified woman was in critical condition at a Norfolk hospital last night, after a hit-and-run crash threw her from the van she was riding in on Weeksville Road Thursday afternoon. The van flipped over five times, after avoiding a car that pulled out of a parking lot. Three other people in the van were also injured, while a search for the vehicle that left the scene continued last night.
The state environmental regulators have alerted Manteo officials that recent soil samples show high levels of petroleum by-products from an area along Queen Elizabeth Street owned by the town. Privately owned above ground fuel tanks were removed from the site decades ago. A citizen alerted regulators of a smell of fuel after a water main broke in May.
Nags Head Police are looking for Zane Codi Reynolds, wanted on a pair burglary counts. Authorities say the 23-year old may be in either Dare or Currituck, and is a suspect in cases of stealing items from unlocked vehicles.
The alleged victim of molestation by her father 7 years ago told the state Innocence Commission that the former Plymouth police officer did not do it. The now 15-year old testified before a three-judge panel in the hearing for Henry Reeves, who has since served a sentence for the alleged crime.
A UNC institute study says a proposed “green” industrial park in northern Camden County could cost more than 40-million dollars to start, and would struggle to attract investors. The institute presented its findings at a public forum in Camden Thursday, and says grants and private investment would be necessary to make the industrial park a reality.
The remnants of Tropical Storm Fay are finally moving out to sea, after dumping as much as a foot of rain on portions of central and western North Carolina. A moderate threat of rip currents is forecast for the beaches today.

South Carolina's overcame four interceptions by first-time starter Tommy Beecher to give Steve Spurrier his 16th-straight opening game victory, 34-0 over North Carolina State on Thursday night. North Carolina State had just 117 yards and eight first downs through three quarters.- North Carolina State is waiting to hear more on the condition of quarterback Russell Wilson. He was carted off the field in Thursday night's loss to South Carolina. Wilson was motionless as he was strapped to backboard and rolled onto a cart. He extended his thumbs upward to acknowledge the cheers of the players and fans at Williams-Brice Stadium. North Carolina State officials announced Wilson had a grade-three concussion and was doing well after going to the hospital. He was scheduled for more tests.
Number-23 Wake Forest beat Baylor 41-13 in the Demon Deacons' first game since being ranked in the pre-season Top-25 for the first time in school history. Riley Skinner tossed three TD passes, two to Chip Brinkman. Skinner completed 27 of 36 passes for 220 yards. He tied a Wake record with his 19th victory as a starting quarterback, as the Deacs won for the first time in 12 tries in the state of Texas.

Steve Smith didn't appear in the game and will now begin serving a two-game suspension, which was given to him after a training camp incident in which he broke the nose of teammate Ken Lucas.
