The Tar Heels are ranked 22nd in the AP poll after beating previously unbeaten Connecticut on Saturday night. North Carolina hasn't been ranked since the 2001 season, John Bunting's first year in Chapel Hill. Carolina hosts Notre Dame this Saturday in a 3:30 kickoff, with a 2:30 airtime on Mix 96.

Oklahoma, Alabama, Missouri, LSU, and Texas comprise the top 5. Virginia Tech is up 2 spots to 18th, Wake Forest moved up 4 places to 21st.

DeAngelo Williams had 123 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns and the Carolina Panthers' defense handed the Kansas City Chiefs their first shutout in nearly six years, 34-0 on Sunday. The Panthers, who have missed the playoffs the past two seasons, are off to their best start since reaching the Super Bowl in the 2003 season.

Washington continues to play well under first-year head coach Jim Zorn. Clinton Portis ran for 145 yards and a touchdown in a 23-17 win at NFC East rival Philadelphia. It's the Redskins fourth straight victory following a season-opening loss and their second straight road win against a division opponent. They won at Dallas a week ago. The Eagles dip to 2-3.

The Giants are showing no signs of a letdown following their Super Bowl season. The defending champions improved to 4-0 with a 44-6 thrashing of visiting Seattle. It's the team's best start since 1990, when they went 13-3 and won the NFL title. Eli Manning threw for a pair of touchdowns and Brandon Jacobs ran for two more scores as New York recorded its eighth straight win dating back to last year's playoffs. The Seahawks 1-3 start is their worst since 2002.

Tennessee protected its unblemished record with a 13-10 win over Baltimore. Kerry Collins threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Alge (AL'-jee) Crumpler with 1:56 left to rally the Titans to their fifth win of the season. The Ravens are 2-2 after absorbing their second straight loss.

The Bucs fall to 3-2 on the season.

After letting a 17-point lead shrivel to one, Dallas claimed a 31-22 victory over the winless Cincinnati Bengals. It's the Cowboys' fourth win in five games this season.

BASEBALL
The Los Angeles Angels erased some postseason demons by beating Boston 5-4 in 12 innings for their first postseason win over the Red Sox in 12 games. NASCAR
Tony Stewart snapped a 43-race winless streak with his first Cup victory at Talladega Superspeedway after finishing second a maddening six times at the Alabama track. Regan Smith took the checkered flag but Stewart was awarded first place when NASCAR ruled Smith drove below the yellow out-of-bounds line to get by Stewart on the final lap. NASCAR decided Smith's move was illegal, and Stewart earned his first win of what's been a frustrating final season at Joe Gibbs Racing. The victory allows Stewart to cross Talladega off the list of 4 active tracks where he'd failed to win a race. Jimmie Johnson still leads the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. Johnson is 72 points ahead of Carl Edwards with Greg Biffle another five points back in third. Stewart moves into seventh place with his win.
