Monday News and Sports

The cleanup continues in a number of counties in Eastern North Carolina, where tornados struck early Saturday morning, killing two people. A 10-year old boy died in Elm City, while a 60-year old woman was killed in Kenly, while dozens of homes and businesses in Johnston and Wilson counties were destroyed.

District Attorney Frank Parrish has told The Daily Advance state law prohibits the release of information from an SBI investigation into whether former Elizabeth City councilman Darryl Stallings lied to elections officials about where he lived. Parrish is not filing charges in the case. The Pasquotank Elections Board determined Stallings did not live in the Third Ward, costing him his council seat last year.

Data collected in October shows that average speeds along West Main and Church streets in Elizabeth City are not high enough to warrant constructing speed bumps to slow traffic down. But City Manager Rich Olson says police will step up patrols when the data showed speeders were more prevalent.

The Elizabeth City Jaycees annual Christmas parade on the first Saturday of December is being moved to an evening event, while the Pasquotank Yacht Club’s Lighted Boat Parade is returning after a 4-year hiatus. The parade will follow its regular route along Ehringhaus, Road, Main and Water streets, and will start at 5:30pm on December 6th. As that parade makes its way along the waterfront, the lighted boat parade on the river will begin. A holiday Waterfront Market bazaar will be also held during that afternoon.

North Carolina was also without fellow senior Marcus Ginyard, injuries that forced North Carolina to thrust Zeller and fellow rookie big man Ed Davis into the lineup.

Brandon Costner scored 19 points to lead N.C. State to a 65-59 victory over New Orleans in the season opener for both teams on Saturday night. The Wolfpack trailed by seven points in the first half before tying the game 31-31 at halftime. N.C. State outscored the Privateers 34-28 in the second half.

NFL – Week 10
The one-two punch of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart dazzled with a record setting day on the ground for Carolina. The Panthers needed all those yards to squeak by the league's only winless team. Stewart rushed for a career-high 130 yards and a touchdown, Williams added 120 yards and two more scores, and Panthers held off the Detroit Lions 31-22 on Sunday. The Panthers won their fourth straight game by setting a team record with 264 yards rushing in the first time two of their backs rushed for over 100 yards in the same game. Carolina surpassed last year's win total and stayed atop the NFC South, but it was a second consecutive sluggish performance that kept the Lions within striking distance all day.

In a low-scoring NFC East affair, the Dallas Cowboys welcomed quarterback Tony Romo back with a 14-10 win over Washington. Romo returned after missing three games with a broken pinkie on his throwing hand. Romo played with that finger covered in a heavy bandage that also wrapped around his wrist. Romo was steady, completing 19 of 27 for 198 yards. Marion Barber was huge with 114 yards, including 66 in the fourth quarter when the Cowboys iced it. Both teams are now 6-4, three games back of the division-leading New York Giants.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
This week's AP college football Top 25 looks a lot like last week's. In fact, the top 16 spots are unchanged, with Alabama coming in at number one with 42 first-place votes, Texas Tech is second followed by Florida, Texas and Oklahoma. Maryland is the highest ranked ACC team at 22, Miami is back in the rankings for the first time in two years at 23, while North Carolina falls to 25th.

The BCS standings are also unchanged at the top with Alabama and Texas Tech holding on to the top two spots.

NASCAR
Nothing could stop Jimmie Johnson's drive into the NASCAR record books. Not even a final, furious push by Carl Edwards. Edwards led a race-high 157 laps to win Sunday's season-ending race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. But his series-high ninth win of the year wasn't enough to wrest away the Sprint Cup title. Johnson locked up his third consecutive championship with a solid 15th-place run, beating Edwards by 69 points to join Cale Yarborough as the only drivers in NASCAR history to win three straight titles. Yarborough did it 30 years ago.
